Interesting Facts about Sapphires

Corundum

Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminium oxide.

The sapphire is one of three gem-varieties of corundum (including ruby). Corundum is derived from the Sri Lankan word ‘kuruvinda’.

Alluvial Deposits

Sapphires are mainly found close to the surface of the ground known as alluvial deposits and often discovered near rural villages, providing economic support to the local residents.

Word Origin

The English word ‘sapphire’ derives from the Latin word sapphirus, the Greek word sappheiros and the Hebrew word sappir.

Moh’s Hardness Scale

In terms of hardness and durability, sapphire (corundum) is 9 on the scale; only second to that of a diamond (10).

Chemical Composition

Sapphires are coloured by one or more chemicals such as iron, chromium, titanium, and vanadium. Pure corundum is colourless (allochromatic) but often bear colour impurities due to its chemical composition.

Use of Treatment

Dating as far as back as the Roman Empire, almost 90% of all sapphires are treated and can mean the difference between a piece of rough being cast aside as useless, or being commercially viable (by enhancing its colour and clarity).

Mining Sources

Sapphires have been mined in the following countries: Australia, Burma, Cambodia, China, Colombia, India, Laos, Madagascar, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, USA, and Vietnam.

Heat Treatment

Used for centuries, heat is permanent and also the most common form of treatment as it enhances the colour and clarity of a sapphire. A sapphire is put into a furnace at very high temperatures.
