Inspiration Behind the Design Challenge


The design challenge is a celebration of creativity, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and inviting designers to craft their own masterpiece. It’s about tapping into your artistic vision and bringing it to life in a way that reflects your unique style. This challenge is not just about creating a piece of jewellery—it's about joining a community of like-minded artists, sharing your journey, and inspiring others.

Who can participate in the design challenge?
The challenge is open exclusively to jewellery designers based in the USA and Canada.

What type of sapphire will be provided for the design challenge?
Each designer will receive a responsibly sourced Australian sapphire, weighing approximately 0.80-0.90ct and measuring around 7x5mm in an oval shape. These sapphires come in a variety of stunning colours, adding a unique element to each design.


What materials will be provided for the design?
Each selected designer will receive a responsibly sourced Australian sapphire to use in their piece. Accent gemstones or diamonds can be included, and Capricorn Gems can supply melee sapphires, subject to availability.

What types of jewellery can I create?
You can design a ring, necklace, pendant, or bracelet using the provided sapphire.

What is the timeline for the challenge?
The challenge will run for 45 days, beginning with the Instagram Live selection event on September 30, 2024, culminating with the final reveal on November 15, 2024.

How will my work be showcased?
Your design will be featured across Sorbet Sapphire and Capricorn Gems’ social media platforms, offering global exposure, as well as at the OJB Experience in Tucson (February 6-8, 2025).

What happens if my piece sells?
If your piece is sold by January 5, 2025, you’ll need to remake the design for the OJB Experience. You will also have the opportunity to select from 3-4 sapphires for the remake.

What happens if my piece doesn’t sell?
If your piece doesn’t sell within 1 year of the reveal, you’ll be required to purchase the sapphire at a wholesale price of $300 USD.

Can I include accent stones in my design?
Yes, you are welcome to include accent gemstones or diamonds in your design. Capricorn Gems can provide melee sapphires (2.0-3.0mm) upon request, subject to availability.

How do I submit my application to participate?
Applications must be submitted through the official entry form by September 29, 2024, on the Sorbet Sapphire website. Selected participants will be announced during an Instagram Live event on September 30, 2024.

What if I cannot complete my piece by the deadline?
Timeliness is crucial to the success of the challenge. If you believe you may be unable to meet the deadline, please do not submit an entry. All selected designers are expected to meet all deadlines. Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Do I retain ownership of my design?
Yes, the design remains the property of the designer. Sorbet Sapphire and Capricorn Gems have no intention of claiming ownership of your creation.

Are there any costs involved for participants?
There is no cost to enter the challenge, but should your piece sell, you will be required to purchase the sapphire at a wholesale price of $300 USD. If your piece does not sell within 1 year after the reveal, you will be required to purchase the sapphire at a wholesale price of $300 USD.

Can I wholesale my piece after the challenge?
Yes, designers are welcome to consider wholesaling their piece during or after the Out of the Jewel Box (OJB) Experience if they see fit.

How will you support us with social media promotions?
Our team will guide and coordinate social media engagement throughout the challenge, ensuring that your design process is shared and highlighted with a broader audience.
